Mountain Spy Liz Eren plays an eager young adult yearning to work and play in the mountains-remember those? We called them "ski bums." Unfortunately, many resorts aren't feeling that love or passion anymore. Perhaps we should get more "human" in the HR department.
MOUNTAIN 1

First Contact: Male. Nice sounding.
SAM: Stated question.
Staff: Let me connect you to human resources, hold on please.
Answering Phone: Woman. Nice sounding.
SAM: Restated question.
Staff: They actually don't hire ticket checkers. Those are lift loaders, they rotate around. So if you wanted to do that you would also be working on the lifts.
SAM: Okay, cool. What do you mean exactly by "working on the lifts?"
Staff: Loading people on and off. Silence…
SAM: Oh, OK, that's fine. It all seems like a fun job to me, no matter the exact position. And I would be able to ski right? During the day…
Staff: Umm, on your days off. I'm not in the lift department, so I'm not really sure what the policy is of when you get to ski. But the best thing for you to do is to apply online. And you would go for "lifts."
SAM: Sounds good, I can do that.
Staff: Yeah, and if you want, we have a job fair on Saturday, and you'd be able to talk to the manager then.
SAM: This Saturday?
Staff: Yup.
SAM: Great. Do you suggest I apply online and come to the job fair or just come to the job fair?
Staff: Well, I would fill out an application online because we'll print them all out and have them at the job fair.
SAM: Perfect. Well, thanks so much. I'll see you on Saturday.

Comment: Nice enough, but where's the spirit?

MOUNTAIN 2

First Contact: Young female. Very nice.
SAM: Stated question.
Staff: Um, yup, so you need to go online and you can print off the application form. Fill that out and, like, are you in X town or ... ?
SAM: Yup, I'm nearby.
Staff: OK, so you can either do it online or you can come in and get one and fill it out. You'll need to hand in the application form and your resumé.
SAM: So you suggest I do both?
Staff: Yes, I would suggest both.
SAM: And I can just find the application on your website?
Staff: Yup, down at the bottom you can click on employment and it will show all the jobs we have available right now, and there's a link to download the application.
SAM: OK, and what is the official job title of that position?
Staff: A mountain greeter.
SAM: Mountain greeter, OK. And so they do the lifts and greet people?
Staff: They don't do the lifts. It's just handling tickets and doing guest service inside.
SAM: Is there a specific position for the people at the bottom of the lifts?
Staff: That's a "liftie" if you're just doing the lifts.
SAM: Cool. And I can apply for both positions?
Staff: Yeah, sure. Of course!
SAM: And can you ski during the day in that position? I hope!?
Staff: Um, the lifties get ride breaks, yes, because they switch around during the days. I mean, you usually work on one lift for the whole season, but, yeah, they get ride breaks. I'm not sure if greeters get ride breaks, sorry. They definitely might.
SAM: OK, no worries. I'll go online and fill out an application. Thanks!

Rating: 8
Comment: Short and sweet and to the point.

MOUNTAIN 3

First Contact: Young female. Not very happy sounding.
SAM: Stated question.
Staff: Uhh, well, the best way to try and get on there is to come to the job fair on Saturday. Bring a resumé and all pertinent stuff and people will be there to interview, ah, whoever.
SAM: OK, sure. What is the official title of that position?
Staff: Well, it is car parking, ticket checking, snow shoveling, there is, ahh, lift attendant.
SAM: Is the lift attendant the person at the bottom checking tickets?
Staff: Basically ticket checker, yes.
SAM: And do they get to ski during the day I assume?
Staff: Umm, during the day, not so much. Maybe if their shift is done early and they have time to go.
SAM: Hmm, OK. So you just suggest I come to the job fair and talk to the manager of that department?
Staff: That's correct. Silence…
SAM: Great. What time does it start?
Staff: 10. Silence…
SAM: And it's at the base of the mountain?
Staff: Yes. Silence…
SAM: Any specific location?
Staff: Um, the X bar and grill.
SAM: Thanks!

Rating: 2
Comment: I can't wait to work there and have a beer with her after my shift.

MOUNTAIN 4

First Contact: Female.
SAM: Stated question.
Staff: Um, you start online. Have you been on our website at all?
SAM: I have, yeah, but not to apply for a job.
Staff: OK, well it's ourskiarea.com, and then at the very bottom is a tab called employment.
SAM: OK.
Staff: So, like, you click on that and you have to submit an application via, like, our online application, or you could do it in person if you're around. But it's easiest just to fill it out online. And then it kinda goes from there. Like it shows you what positions are available, so if they're still hiring you can go ahead and apply for one of those. And you get three choices. You just fill that out and submit it ,and then someone will be contacting you once they get your application.
SAM: Sweet. So what's the official title of that position?
Staff: Umm, like you could do guest services, ooor, umm, ya know, well, do you just want to check tickets or do the lift stuff? Like lift operator is what you do there at the base of the lift.
SAM: Where they help people onto the lift?
Staff: Mm hmm.
SAM: So that's a totally different position than the people checking tickets?
Staff: Mm hmm, sure is!
SAM: OK, well, either one of those is what I was interested in.
Staff: Well, yeah, so, like, it gives you three choices so I would just look and see if one of those is still available.
SAM: All right. And then I just wait to hear back from you?
Staff: Mm hmm.
SAM: And I get to ski during the day?
Staff: Yup, as long as you're working 40 hours a week you get a free ski pass.
SAM: Very cool. So I assume the sooner I apply the better?
Staff: Yeah, yeah. Like, most departments are already done hiring, so I would say you should try to do it today, yeah.
SAM: Sounds good, thanks!

Rating: 5
Comment: Like, some of that was confusing, but she, like, tried her best.

MOUNTAIN 5

First Contact: Young female. Snippy sounding.
SAM: Stated question.
Staff: Umm, just come up to the front desk and fill out an application. Silence…
SAM: That's it?
Staff: Thaat's it.
SAM: Alrighty. And I assume those people get to ski during the day?
Staff: Yes. Silence…
SAM: Hmm, OK, well all that sounds good. I guess I'll just come up to the front desk and fill out an application.
Staff: OK, sounds good.
SAM: Thanks!

Rating: 1
Comment: She was like an enthusiasm vacuum.

MOUNTAIN 6

First Contact: Automated machine. Chose operator.
Answering Phone: Female. Nice sounding.
SAM: Stated question.
Staff: Let me put you through to human resources.
Transferred….
Answering Phone: Female. Nice sounding.
SAM: Restated question.
Staff: OK, have you filled an application out yet?
SAM: No, not yet.
Staff: OK, well that's your first step. If you're local you can come right up to the mountain or, if not, you can go online to ourskiarea.com and click on the employment page and fill out an application online. And you're talking about the ticket checking in the lift lines?
SAM: Yeah, I think so. I just see them outside all day, hanging out with people. It looked pretty fun! And you get to ski a bunch hopefully?!
Staff: Yup, yup! Oh, absolutely! Soo, on your application, it's going to ask you which positions you want to apply for. In that section just put ticket checker and it will go to the person who collects the applications online, who will send it to the manager, and then we'll call you for an interview. And all that stuff. So your first step is to fill out the application. And if you're local you can just come up and fill one out if that's easier for you…
SAM: Awesome. Well I'm kind of local so I'll just fill one out online if that's OK?
Staff: Sure, of course.
SAM: Great. And you said that that position does get to ski during the day, too?
Staff: Umm, you can ski on your breaks, yes. And you can ski on your days off and stuff like that.
SAM: Sounds good. Well thanks so much. I'll go online and fill out an application.
Staff: No problem!

MOUNTAIN 7

First Contact:Automated machine. Chose operator.
Answering Phone: Female. Nice sounding
SAM: Stated question.
Staff: All right, um, let me put your through to employee services.
Transferred…
Answering Phone: Not a very happy sounding woman.
SAM: Restated question.
Staff: OK, you need to, ah, fill out an application. And if you can come to the job fair that would be terrific. Ah, what you'll want to do is apply as a lift attendant.
SAM: OK.
Staff: Um, sounds like you would kind of be in maze control, ha ha. We used to call them ticket checkers, but that's no longer a department. Um, anyway, that would probably be your best bet. Would you be able to make it this Saturday?
SAM: Yeah, I think so. What time does it start?
Staff: Well it starts at 8:00 and goes until 2:00, but the line will start early, just to give you fair warning.
SAM: Sure.
Staff: I mean some people get in line at three in the morning.
SAM: Wow! That's incredible. Well I'll plan accordingly. Is there a way to fill out an application ahead of time?
Staff: You can download the application. You can fill it out and bring it with you, but don't email or fax it to me. We don't do that.
SAM: No problem. So the maze controller, as you would call it, what does that position entail exactly?
Staff: Well, you would be trained as a lift attendant. And those are, like, the people that help you on the chair and those kinds of things.
SAM: Awesome. And you're able to ski too, right?
Staff: Absolutely. You can ski or snowboard for free. There is the occasional time when you can't like Christmas day. But, yeah, you can ski or board. And if you have immediate family, like a spouse, they ski for free.
SAM: Very cool. So your recommendation is to get to the job fair as early as I can. Do all those jobs fill up that day?
Staff: Well, I don't know, some are already filled. But the earlier you get there, the better. Can you download that application before you come in?
SAM: I can, yes. Is the job fair at the base of the mountain?
Staff: It is yes. There will be greeters to tell you where to go.
SAM: Well, thanks so much I really appreciate it!

Rating: 7
Comments: Good info, but not so good on the enthusiasm.

MOUNTAIN 8

First Contact:Young male. Super fast talker.
SAM: Stated question.
Staff: OK, there's a couple ways you can do that. Go to xxx.com and once you're there you can go to job opportunities and see all the listings and apply from there. Um, that's how it mainly all gets done. Umm, and then there's one more job fair in November that will be on that site that you can come to.
SAM: OK, so if I go online to apply to get a jump start is there just one position I should apply for or are there a few positions that would fit what I'm looking for?
Staff: Yeah, you'll go ahead and when you're there you'll see all the openings on the mountain and then there will be a description for every single job opening that's, ahh, open, currently.
SAM: Perfect, well I can do that.
Staff: Awesome.
SAM: So, yeah, I mean if you think I should talk to HR that would be great unless you think applying online and coming to the job fair is enough?
Staff: I do think it's better that way. Silence…
SAM: Oookay, so then I just wait to hear back from you guys?
Staff: Yup. Silence…
SAM: All right then, I guess I'll start online. Thanks!

Rating: 6
Comment: That felt rushed. At least he provided decent website directions.

MOUNTAIN 9

First Contact:Automated machine. Chose operator.
Answering Phone: Male. Nice sounding.
SAM: Stated question.
Staff: Hmm, I, ah, I am not actually completely certain. I believe in order to apply you need to get in touch with the human resources department. Ah, I also know we're going to have a job fair up here in about two days. I believe Thursday we'll be running it. So, ah, making an appearance there would probably, ah, be a good bet as well. But if you give me just a moment I can try and track down a number for you.
SAM: Ah, sure. Thanks.
Staff: All right, ah, I think HR is closed, but I'm going to transfer you to the person in charge of that department. And I suggest leaving your name explaining your interest in the position and any kind of contact information you have-phone, cell number, e-mail address, just list it all off. And, ah, honestly, tomorrow just call back and asked to be transferred to human resources and we'll get you in touch with them.
SAM: Sounds great, thanks.
Staff: All right, not a problem. Sorry I couldn't be a little more helpful.
SAM: No problem!
Transferred…
Answering Phone: Female. Sad sounding.
SAM: Stated question.
Staff: Umm, well, have you sent in an application or resume?
SAM: I haven't, no.
Staff: OK, that would be a good, um, really good if you could send it, or come up and fill out an application.
SAM: Sure, I can do that.
Staff: We are having a couple of job fairs. We actually have one this week on Thursday. Um, you're talking, um, working with the lifts maybe. Unfortuntely, our lifts maintenance manager will not be at this job fair. He'll be at the later job fairs, but if there are any other positions you're interested in, um, the job fair is a great thing to go to so you can meet the hiring managers and, ya know, get on a name basis with them and fill out an application at the same time. So, I would suggest coming up and filling out an application or coming to the job fair.
SAM: Great, I can come up on Thursday. So does that fall under lift maintenance or is it its own thing? Do I get to ski every day?
Staff: Um, that position would fall under lift maintenance so, um, you would have to talk to the lift maintenance manager.
SAM: OK, I can talk to him at another job fair.
Staff: Yeah. And we're hiring for a lot of positions so you can browse through and see what other positions you might be interested in and working so that's another option.
SAM: Awesome, thanks so much. I'll be there on Thursday.

Rating: 7
Comment: Kind and polite, but she sounded so bored! I want to come work there. Show me some excitement.

MOUNTAIN 10

First Contact:Automated machine. Chose operator.
Answering Phone: Young female, very nice sounding.
SAM: Stated question.
Staff: Well, um, on November x, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. we have a job fair and that's where we do most of our hiring. So you're welcome to stop by any time throughout that period, but I would recommend early rather than later. I remember last year that most of the departments were full before 8.
SAM: Oh, wow, OK.
Staff: Yeah, but all the job fair is is that you come and fill out an application and then you do a short interview with the department head of the department that you want to work in. And you're welcome to apply for more than one department.
SAM: Cool. And what department would I-
Staff: Oh, that would be the lift department.
SAM: OK, perfect. And does that position have an official title?
Staff: Well, the position that you would be, we call it liftie. Ha ha. We don't get too technical around here. I believe they rotate between top and bottom lift.
SAM: Sure.
Staff: Yeah, so I think you would be in a variety of positions, maybe moving from one lift to another lift.
SAM: Yeah, sure. And I assume I would be able to ski during the day?
Staff: Um, while working, um, no. But we offer extremely discounted season passes for employees. So, like, if you just needed a lift pass it would only be a dollar. And if you need seasonal rentals, than it's like $25.
SAM: Oh, wow.
Staff: Yeah, it's a pretty good deal.
SAM: For sure. So I could ski on my days off at least.
Staff: Yeah! Or if you have to come in at 8 a.m. and you're off at 2, then you could ski all afternoon.
SAM: Sounds great. So the job fair is where you suggest I start?
Staff: Yes, that's, um, where we do most of our hiring. Right now we don't have, like most of our department heads are full-time seasonal so they're not here yet. You could fill out an application ahead of time, but we usually get all the hiring done in one day so that would be really where you'd want to start.
SAM: Awesome, well I'll plan to get there early in the morning then!
Staff: Definitely. Thanks for calling!

Comment: Patient and detailed info with a stellar attitude!

SAM: Stated question
Staff: OK, let me get you to personnel and they can tell you what you need.
Transferred…
Answering Phone: Young female. Nice sounding.
SAM: Stated question.
Staff: Um, sure, have you been to our website yet?
SAM: Not to apply for a job, no.
Staff: Yeah, if you go to xxx.com, that has the application on there and you'll have to create an online profile. The job that I think you're referring to is a lift attendant.
SAM: Yeah.
Staff: And that job is posted so you can definitely apply to that one. Other positions you might be interested in are a greeter/host, ya know, you can kind of check and see what's available right now and then just submit your application online.
SAM: What's a greeter/host?
Staff: A greeter/host is a little harder to come by because we don't hire as many, but it's essentially the same thing only you're not specific to a lift. But you're interacting with the guest perhaps carrying their skis or boards and stuff like that.
SAM: Sounds great. Well, I can go online and fill out an application and I assume you would just contact me or should I follow up?
Staff: Yeah, as long as you meet the minimum qualifications for the position you're applying to you should receive a phone call within, actually what you'll get is an e-mail to schedule a time for a phone screening and you'll book that time online. And you should be able to book your first phone interview in about a week.
SAM: Perfect. And I assume the lift attendants get to ski during the day?
Staff: Um, they do, they can take a ride break. Depending on what lift you're stationed at you may have to ski to or from your post as well, but, yeah.
SAM: That's sounds great, either way, yeah. Well, thanks so much, I'll go online now.
Staff: Thanks for calling!

First Contact:Automated machine. Chose operator.
Answering Phone: Young female, nice sounding.
SAM: Stated question.
Staff: OK, they're lift attendants and you can apply online at xxx.com or we have a job fair coming up on Saturday from 10 to 2.
SAM: Perfect.
Staff: I would do both, yup.
SAM: OK. And do you get to ski in that position during the day I assume? Or at least hope so!
Staff: I, I don't know because I'm not in that department. I don't know what their policies are.
SAM: All right, no worries. Well, then I guess I'll just apply online and head over to the job fair.
Staff: Sounds good. Silence…
SAM: All right then, thanks.

First Contact:Automated machine. Chose operator.
Answering Phone: Female. Nice sounding.
SAM: Stated question.
Staff: Yeah, no problem, we're accepting applications through X source. And I think you can Google it or the website is xxx.com. And apply there and then our job fair will be on November 5 up here at the mountain and you can meet all the hiring managers and have an interview.
SAM: Sounds good. So you suggest I apply online and then follow up at the job fair?
Staff: Yeah, definitely put in an application because they will do some pre-scheduled interviews, but, um, be sure to bring a resumé and dress for an interview at the job fair.
SAM: OK, and what is the official title of that position?
Staff: That's a lift operator or lift attendant.
SAM: Cool. And do they get to ski during the day?
Staff: Yeah, it depends. There's breaks and stuff, or if you work at night you can ski during the day, obviously.
SAM: Perfect. I will go ahead and fill out an application online. Thanks!

Staff: Well, you can go online and apply for one of the snowsports positions, but the ski lift positions aren't online yet. But you can go ahead and apply and then give me a call with your name and what you applied for and then I can pull the application and mark what you're interested in.
SAM: OK. Should I apply for anything specific?
Staff: Yeah, there's like ski instructors on there. Just go ahead apply for one of them 'cause ski lifts aren't on there.
SAM: All right and then give you a call back?
Staff: Yeah, just give me a call with your name and I'll pull it and mark what you're interested in.
SAM: OK, sure. Is that it or are there any job fairs? Do you have those?
Staff: October X in Y at the Z Inn.
SAM: Great. So you suggest filling out an application and coming to the job fair?
Staff: One to six is the time frame. Well, you can do it either way, whatever you would like to do.
SAM: Thanks. I assume that position gets to ski during the day?
Staff: The people that are on the chairlifts?
SAM: Yeah, I mean the people that are doing the tickets and stuff…
Staff: Yeah, I mean they can ski when they're not working.
SAM: Gotcha, thanks!
Staff: Why don't you go ahead and give me your name. Oh wait, it's on the X date, not what I said earlier. Same time. So what's your name? (Gave fake name.)
Staff: Thanks. I'll keep a look out for your application and then flag it when it comes in.
