SAM Magazine - The Canyons, Ut., December 26, 2007 - An in-bounds avalanche at The Canyons on December 23 has left one man dead and a child critically injured. The incident, which took place in the Red Pines Chutes area off the ski area's Ninety-Nine 90 lift, took the life of a 30-year-old man from Colorado and injured an 11-year-old boy.

The Canyons Ski Patrol arrived on the scene within four minutes of the initial call for assistance, and the deceased was located four minutes later. The injured adolescent was rescued some 25 minutes thereafter.

The cause of death of the victim was determined to be trauma due to impacts sustained in the avalanche.

Like many resorts in the immediate area, The Canyons had experienced extensive snow accumulations from a series of cold fronts that passed through Utah. Avalanche control work had been performed throughout the week, including explosives and other control measures Red Pines Chutes prior to the slide. The area had opened to skiers one day prior to the incident. The crown of the slide was three to five feet deep and 175 feet wide, with the path running 500 feet long.

The injured 11-year-old was found with no pulse and was not breathing. He was revived by CPR prior to being evacuated to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City, where his condition continues to improve. \
