SAM Magazine - Denver, Colo., February 18, 2008 - Frontier has announced an aggressive move into the winter vacation market, with discounted fares to a variety of ski destinations including Aspen, Durango and Jackson Hole.

With rates starting as low as $89 for one-way flights to Aspen and Jackson Hole from Denver, the pricing is an aggressive move into turf formerly dominated by carriers such as United, which charged a premium for flights to ski resorts such as Aspen from Denver.

Given United's recent decision to charge $25 for a second checked piece of baggage, it's likely that Frontier's strategy will pay off, as customers abandon beleagured United for both Frontier's lower fares and to avoid being penalized if they are traveling with ski and snowboard bags (which usually are the second piece of luggage checked by passengers on winter vacations).

The fares on offer by Frontier will remind long-time Jackson-Denver travelers of the notorious "mail plane," which offered flights for under $100 one-way between Jackson and Jefferson County Airport in Broomfield, Colorado, 30 minutes outside of Denver. That service still exists, although prices for one-way flights have risen in recent years. \
