SAM Magazine-Denver, Colo., May 9, 2008-With Maine's Sugarloaf and Colorado's Loveland ceasing operations last weekend, several resorts remain open: Arapahoe Basin, Snowbird, Mammoth, Squaw Valley, Mt. Hood Meadows, Mt. Bachelor, and Brundage (and of course, Timberline, which operates year-round except for a few weeks in September for maintenance and R&R). Canadian resort Sunshine Village is also open, with a May 21 closing day. Blackcomb remains open through June 8, and will begin glacier skiing on June 9. Arapahoe Basin expects to cease operations on June 8 also.

Riders on last chair at Sugarloaf, Maine, say goodbye to a great season.

Brundage is an unlikely candidate for late-season skiing, with the resort usually ceasing operations the second week of April. A record-setting season prompted resort management to operate weekends only through Saturday, May 10. It is the first time in the resort's history that the lifts have run into May.

"The snow keeps coming, and the warm temperatures are staying away. Slope conditions have been excellent and so has the interest from our guests, so we're staying open to share this great experience and to share our appreciation," says resort spokesperson April Russell.

Snowbird will extend operations into June, with a July 4 closing date not out of the question should conditions permit-this has happened twice before. "With last week's storm and additional precipitation this week, it looks like we'll have plenty of snow for great skiing through the last weekend of May, beginning of June," says Snowbird President Bob Bonar. "We will continue to offer skiing and riding as long as the conditions are safe, enjoyable and there's interest."

The resort will offer skiing and riding daily through Sunday, May 11, and then Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through June 1 (including Monday, May 26, Memorial Day). The ski area currently boasts more than 11 feet of snow on the ground at mid-mountain. \
