SAM Magazine-Revelstoke, B.C., May 27, 2008-The first season was a good one for Canada's newest resort. Revelstoke Mountain ceased winter operations on April 27, chalking up 44 percent more skier visits than expected. Selkirk Tangiers Helicopter Skiing, owned by the resort, also posted strong numbers, with skier visits up 20 percent.

Revelstoke Mountain Resort, built upon the existing but much smaller Mt. Mackenzie Ski Area, opened on December 22nd with a an eight-person gondola and high-speed quad chairlift servicing skiers 4,735 vertical feet with 27 runs. The terrain on tap for the resorts first year covered 1,500 acres.

This summer, the resort embarks upon an aggressive expansion program, which will eventually make it one of the biggest ski areas in North America. Current plans include a new high-speed quad chairlift in the resort's North Bowl area, which will open up 900 acres of intermediate terrain (ski runs and tree skiing), and 300 additional acres of expert skiing. Extended glading and trail cutting will expand both the ski area and the existing 500,000 acres of Selkirk Tangiers Helicopter Skiing terrain, and cat skiing terrain will increase to 2,210 acres.

In addition, the resort plans to add 885 vertical feet to the existing gondola this summer, giving the ski area the longest lift-serviced vertical descent in North America at 5,620 feet.

The on-mountain improvements will be complemented by a new base village area, including full-service restaurants, retail and rental shops, lift ticket and skier facilities and additional parking for 1,000 vehicles. \
