SAM Magazine-Newry, Maine, Oct. 29, 2008-Sunday River will open for the Halloween weekend. It's the second year for the resort to drop the ropes for Halloween, and the second year that anyone who shows up in a costume on Halloween will ski for free. The opening has been bolstered by recent cold temperatures ideal for snowmaking.

"We have been adding new snowmaking technologies, including tower guns and fan guns, which help us make more snow early in the season," said Dana Bullen, Sunday River GM. "Opening on Halloween is a great treat to offer skiers and riders across New England, and we're proud to be able to offer it."

Lift access will begin at 10:00 a.m. Friday morning. The resort will remain open on Saturday and Sunday before temporarily closing for the following midweek period.

Open terrain, including a small terrain park, on Friday will be on the upper mountain, and for advanced skiers and riders only. Lift access will be on the Locke Mountain Triple. Additional trails may open for the weekend depending on temperatures and snowmaking. Lift tickets on Halloween will be $25 for all ages; however, tickets are free for skiers and riders arriving in costume. Lift ticket rates for the weekend have not yet been announced. \
