SAM Magazine- Alta, Wyo., April 1, 2009-Grand Targhee Resort has become the first winter resort to register its complete emissions inventory with the Climate Registry. The move establishes a baseline for measuring the resort's carbon footprint, which can be used to accurately and comprehensively manage the resort's emissions.

The Climate Registry sets standards that enable businesses to calculate, verify and publicly report GHG emissions. The data must be reported according to comprehensive and rigorous standards and verified by an independent third party. Grand Targhee reported its 2007 emissions inventory with consultation from The Brendle Grooup, and the inventory was verified by Advanced Waste Management.

Grand Targhee expects this move to have important "ripple effects," said Christina Thomure, director of sustainable operations at Grand Targhee. "We now have the opportunity to extend our knowledge and activities out to our customers and to also accurately manage our impact on the environment. We have a long way to go toward reducing our environmental impacts, but understanding precisely what those impacts are is essential to effectively mitigating them."

"This exemplifies true environmental leadership and commitment towards addressing climate change. Many organizations are establishing goals to be carbon neutral and implementing environmental initiatives, but the organizations that take climate change seriously will be able to report and manage their emissions inventories with accuracy and according to recognized standards," said Diane Wittenberg, executive director of The Climate Registry. \
