SAM Magazine-Christchurch, New Zealand, Sept. 3, 2010-An earthquake measuring 7.4 magnitude hit Christchurch, New Zealand, and the South Island, causing widespread damage and power cuts to most of the city. The quake was centered about 20 miles west of Christchurch and 20 miles underground. It hit at 4.35 a.m. Saturday.

It is not known how the local ski areas fared; several were reported to be closed temporarily, including Cheeseman and Mt. Dobson. Mt. Hutt was assessing its status after power was restored.

Power is out to most of Christchurch and rural Canterbury, and the central city was closed down by police because of the amount of rubble in the streets. Water pipes have ruptured and there are reports of flooding in some eastern Christchurch areas. \
