SAM Magazine-Jindabyne, Australia, June 21, 2011-The Southern Hemisphere's ski season is off to a slow start: the majority of Australian resorts are open and have just received 10-20 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours, while resorts in New Zealand and South America have postponed their openings due to a widespread lack of snow.

Australia has had snow over the last couple of weeks, with up to an additional 20 inches in the past few days. Open resorts include: Falls Creek, Mt. Buller, Mt. Baw Baw, Hotham, Perisher, Selwyn Snowfields, and Thredbo.

But as of today, all areas in New Zealand, Chile and Argentina are closed.

New Zealand's Coronet Peak, Mt Hutt, Snowpark, and The Remarkables have all postponed their openings. Treble Cone, Porters, Cardrona, Snowfarm, Turoa, and Ohau are scheduled to open this week, but the weather has not been cooperating. Some areas have set their opening date as late as July 9.

Cerro Catedral and Las Lenas in Argentina have postponed their openings until June 25, while Portillo and Valle Nevado in Chile aren't opening until June 24. But none of these have much snow to talk about, and not much in the forecast, with daytime highs near 50 and lows in the 30s.
