SAM Magazine-Truckee, Calif., July 1, 2011-A grand total of 12 North American ski areas will be open this weekend for the 4th of July and Canada Day holidays, following what was for many a record-setting winter and spring snowfall.

California will have the most ski areas open-a total of six. Mammoth has been open daily, as it has been since last fall. It will be joined by re-opening Kirkwood, Alpine Meadows, Donner Ski Ranch, Squaw Valley and Sugar Bowl.

These areas are joined by Mt. Bachelor and Timberline, Ore., Arapahoe Basin, Colo., Crystal Mountain, Wash., and Snowbird, Utah, plus Blackcomb, B.C.

Crystal Mountain and Arapahoe Basin have been operating weekends, as has Snowbird in Utah. Timberline and Blackcomb have reopened for their summer seasons.

Many of these resorts are also putting their regular summer operations into high gear as well, making the festivities all the more festive. \
