SAM Magazine-Squaw Valley, July 27, 2011-Squaw Valley USA has detailed the first two years of a five-year, $50 million capital improvement plan that will impact the on-mountain and base village experience. Plans include everything from new food and hospitality offerings to new beginner and advanced high-speed chairlifts, trail improvements and a state-of-the-art mountain information system.

For 2011-12, the area is investing $15 million. Improvements will include new features in the resort's terrain parks, additional snowcats, a restyled upper terminal on the Funitel with a ski-up coffee shop, state-of-the-art electronic information boards and expanded signage throughout the resort.

Dining options are also being expanded. A revamped and relaunched Blue Coyote in the village, and a revitalized and redesigned KT-Sundeck at Olympic House, are part of the package. At the latter, there will be outdoor fire pits, on-mountain "K-banas" for more private revelry, and the entire KT-Sundeck will feature an indoor/outdoor bar. The current Bar One space will be enclosed to create a new dining and beverage space.

Atop the Funitel, the current Crossroad Cafe will be transformed into an on-mountain market. And at Olympic House, the wildly popular Wildflour Baking Company will expand in area and menu variety.

To help the Snowsports School fulfill its aim to significantly improve the beginner learning experience, Squaw is adding three conveyor lifts, new rental gear, progression-based terrain features, and a new lesson structure. A new design for the Snowsports School will enable increased service and a streamlined reservation and registration process. A relocated and expanded rental and demo center is also part of the overhaul.

Additionally, a major portion of the interior of the 17,000 square foot Squaw Kids facility is being remodeled and refurbished. Future plans include improvements to the High Camp beginner complex at el. 8200', additional conveyor lifts, and on-mountain children's attractions.

The base level of Squaw Valley's Olympic House base lodge will be transformed into a new day lodge and family recreation center.

Major items for 2012-13 include two new high-speed lifts, to replace the existing Granite Chief and High Camp chairs. In all, Squaw plans to spend $20 million for that season.
