SAM Magazine--July 31, 2012--Potential buyers of the shuttered Powder Ridge ski area in Middlefield, Conn., were given the go-ahead by Middlefield selectmen. The Town, which owns the ski area, received a proposal from Sean Hayes, the owner of nearby Brownstone Exploration and Discovery Park, to purchase the area, but the Board of Selectmen first asked for proof that Hayes had the funds to purchase and operate the ski area before giving the green light. Hayes was independently audited and the report found that the potential buyer had the $700,000 necessary for the purchase, as well as an additional $2 million to operate and upgrade the ski area.

Now the deal awaits Town approval.

As mentioned above, Hayes owns and operates Brownstone, a summer playground with ziplines, wakeboarding and much more, and receives 75,000 visits a season. The purchase of the ski area would allow Hayes to operate year-round.
