Managers said they would keep the lifts and other equipment ready to reopen if the weather cooperates in the next few weeks, but they didn't hold much hope for that. A storm was expected to sweep through the northern part of New Mexico later this week, but it's not expected bring more than three inches of snow.

And that's not enough. Sandia has only been able to operate on its beginner lift and slope this year, and with just a 14-inch base, the new snow likely won't be enough to change that.

The area's scenic 2.7 mile tramway, from town to the resort, remains open daily. Sandia's summer season, including mountain biking and scenic chairlift rides, begin Memorial Day weekend—May 25.
