SAM Magazine—Palmerton, Pa., Mar. 1, 2013—Blue Mountain Ski Area and Resort will start construction on a $20 million water park project this spring, with opening projected for May 2015.

The outdoor park, called Summit Splash, will include a wave pool, water slides and a lazy river. The themes for the various activities will reflect the region's history, which includes mining, railroads, and canals.

The park is the prelude to construction of a 110-room slopeside hotel. Blue Mountain president Barbara Green has said that a hotel will help boost winter business, but that it is not feasible without a draw for summer business as well. And that's where the water park comes in. Projections show that it could bring in up to 3,000 persons daily, and help keep the hotel filled.

Blue Mountain's summer activities already include disc golf and mountain biking. The resort also hosts weddings and other events, including a blues festival.
