More Areas Now Open, Others Join This Weekend

SAM Magazine—Breckenridge, Colo., Nov. 7, 2013—Breckenridge, Mammoth, Calif., Lake Louise, Alberta, Brighton, Utah, and Loon, N.H., are among the several areas that are recently opened or opening in the next few days. The start-ups give skiers and riders more options from coast to coast.

In California, Boreal Mountain Resort reopened Nov. 6 for the season, with one advanced run and eight terrain park features, with skiing and riding beginning off the Castle Peak Quad. Some beginner terrain will open on Nov. 8. The Boreal Lodge will be open for ticket sales, lunch, après, rentals, guest service, retail and restrooms.

Mammoth Mountain opened earlier today, with four lifts and five trails. In addition, Wild Mountain, Minn., has reopened for the season.

Loon Mountain Resort also opened today, one of the earliest openings in the resort's history, thanks to snowmaking upgrades in recent years. Loon has more than 37 acres and two miles of top-to-bottom skiing and riding on Loon Peak through the weekend. All trails will be serviced by the White Mountain Express Gondola and the East Basin Chair. Early-season ticket prices are $49 for adults, $39 for teens, and $29 for juniors and seniors. The mountain will close midweek and reopen Nov.15 for daily operations.

Loon joins two other open areas in New England: Killington, Vt., and Woodbury, Conn. Both Bretton Woods, N.H., and Sunday River, Maine, will reopen for the coming weekend.

In Colorado, Breck will open more than 80 acres on Peak 8 on Nov. 8, including a portion of the Park Lane terrain park, with additional terrain opening over the weekend. The SuperChair, 5-Chair and Rip's Ride lifts will be running. Both private and group lessons will be available, and the GoldRunner Coaster will be open.

And Breck is opening with style. The first 2,000 guests at the base of Peak 8 will receive a free Bavarian cream stuffed éclair, courtesy of the Ski Hill Grill. Or, they can opt for Nature Valley Soft Baked Oatmeal Squares and coffee provided by Starbucks. Plus, the first 150 pass holders to flash their passes at the Epic Pass tent will win a free knit hat. Other prizes will be handed out throughout the day. In addition, DJ DC will be spinning tunes from the Red Bull MXT vehicle.

Two areas in Big Cottonwood Canyon in Utah are opening Nov. 8 as well—Brighton and Solitude. At Brighton, the Explorer and Majestic chairlifts will access 3 trails and a mini terrain park. Snake Creek and Crest lift are expected to open soon. Opening day lift tickets will be $37. Solitude will open three lifts and four groomed runs. Adult tickets will be $39, childrens, $24.

In Alberta, both Sunshine Village and Lake Louise, are opening Nov. 8. Louise will offer 1,450 vertical feet, three runs and select park features, all served by the Glacier Chair. Mt. Norquay, also in the Banff area, and Nakiska will reopen for the weekend, too.

Finally, a couple of other early-bird resorts are reopening for the weekend: Timberline, Ore., and Wolf Creek, Colo., as well as Mont Saint-Sauveur, Que. With a mid-mountain snow depth of 29 inches, Wolf Creek will have all six lifts operating, and will now be open seven days a week. Ski Brule, Mich., plans to open either Nov. 8 or 9, depending on its snowmaking progresss over the next two nights.
