SAM Magazine—Patterson, N.Y., Sept. 18, 2014—After 20 years of operating Thunder Ridge Ski Area, located in the suburban New York City area, lessee-operators Mary and Bob Conklin are retiring and relinquishing operations to the area's current owners, Dean and Wayne Ryder.

The transition from the Conklins to the Ryders is already underway, and everyone involved anticipates a seamless opening and operation of the 2014-15 winter season.

“We built a wonderful business, had a fantastic time doing so,” said Mary Conklin. “But it is time to retire. Our children and grandchildren are not local, and we want to spend time visiting them.”

Since 1995 the Conklins have been providing winter skiing and snow boarding, lessons, equipment rentals, catering, pumpkin picking, hay rides, and race camps to local families.

“Thunder Ridge provides a unique set of family-oriented recreational opportunities to our community,” said Dean Ryder. “The Ryder family wants to continue providing those opportunities as the Conklins did for so many years.

“Bob and Mary developed a very strong team of employees, many of whom return season after season. We are pleased to have these individuals continue to work at Thunder Ridge. The employees are engaged in preparing for the upcoming season, which we expect to begin in December.”
