SAM Magazine—Zagreb, Croatia, Jan. 7, 2015—Seven American men ski racers wore black armbands and tape on their helmets in the Audi FIS Ski World Cup night slalom to honor Ronnie Berlack, Franconia, N.H. and Burke Mountain, Vt., and Bryce Astle, Sandy, Utah—two teammates killed in an avalanche Monday. Prior to the race, the race organizers held a moment of silence.

No Americans finished the race, and only Ted Ligety and David Chodounsky qualified for a second run. Moments after the race, Sasha Rearick, head coach, sent the following tweet: ”So proud of all @usskiteam guys today in #zagreb #worldcup You all absolutely Sent it!” - Sasha Rearick @SashaRearick

The news dispirited what has otherwise been a strong start to the New Year, particularly for freestyler Hannah Kearney, Norwich, Vt., and alpine racer Mikaela Shiffrin, Eagle-Vail, Colo. On Jan. 4, Kearney won her 43rd World Cup victory by edging out Canada's Dufour-Lapointe sisters on their home turf of Calgary. Kearney is now just three World Cup wins away from the all-time freestyle moguls record, currently held by U.S. freestyler Donna Weinbrecht.

That same day, Mikaela Shiffrin won her second straight Audi FIS Ski World Cup slalom in Zagreb. Shiffrin dominated the race, leading the first run by .80 and expanding that lead in the second for a 1.68 second margin over Austria's Kathrin Zettel. American Resi Stiegler finished 13th.

Upcoming events here in the U.S. include the Visa Freestyle International at Deer Valley Resort Jan. 8-10, and the Revolution Tour stop at Seven Springs, Pa., Jan. 26-28. The 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, the third to be held in the U.S., runs Feb. 2-15 at Beaver Creek, Colorado.
