SAM Magazine—Truckee, Calif., June 29, 2015—In a move to dampen the danger of accidental fires, the Tahoe Donner Association has implemented a smoking ban on all its properties. The ban, effective through the end of the year, prohibits smoking at all amenities, common areas, and other association-owned properties. The Truckee Fire Protection District has recently issued Red Flag warnings due to the risks of lightning and strong winds amid extreme fire danger in the region.

“It‘s our responsibility to our guests, members, and community to ensure Tahoe Donner is a safe place to play and visit. We believe this new policy, combined with our current defensible space practices, aligns well with our fire prevention goals,” said Robb Etnyre, general manager.

The ban applies to all individuals, including employees, and encompasses Tahoe Donner's golf course, parking lots, open spaces and trails. Fines for violation of the smoking rule start at $50 and may be assessed, per incident, on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis according to the nature and severity of the infraction. The ban does not apply to homeowners' properties or e-cigarettes, and employees may smoke within their cars.

Tahoe Donner has added information on local free programs to its website for those interested in quitting smoking.

In May, Whistler Blackcomb also implemented a smoke-free policy.
