SAM Magazine—Hood River, Ore., Aug. 7, 2015—The 12th OITAF-NACS Symposium will be held Sept. 8-11 at the Hood River Inn. Themed “Trams, Dams, and Bridges,” the gathering brings together ropeway operators, manufacturing companies, engineers, inspectors and others to discuss and analyze leading issues impacting ropeway transportation around the world.

Included in the lineup of session this year is a look at the technical challenges of the growing number of aerial adventure course and zip lines since the passage of the Ski Area Recreation Opportunity Enhancement Act. The session will examine the three organizations currently developing related standards, with discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of each. Session leaders will also review new applications of wire rope and related operational challenges including wear criteria, proper end connections, inspections, and a look at new ropeway system innovations.

Also on the docket is a case-study look at the Hogwart's Express funicular transportation system installed by Doppelmayr/Garaventa in 2014 at Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla. The system combines proven funicular technology with innovative integration of electronics that deliver an entertaining ride on a themed transportation system.

The Portland Aerial Tramway will also be reviewed. Opened in 2007 with much public skepticism, the tram has since become an integral part of public transit, serving 12 million riders to date. Other session topics: new weather models, with a look at mitigating rope derailments; structural concrete design and construction requirements; and magnetic rope testing.

Registration is $375 for OITAF members, $425 for non-members and is available at http://www.nsaa.org/ropeway-information/oitaf-nacs-information/.
