Push to The Latest: No

Dave RathbunSAM Magazine—Bend, Ore., March 23, 2016—As of March 16, Mt. Bachelor president and general manager Dave Rathbun no longer holds a position with the resort, and nobody knows why. Rathbun said he was unable to speak about the circumstances surrounding his departure and directed questions to John McCloud, the resort's director of finance, who Rathbun said had been appointed acting general manager.

A written statement released by Mt. Bachelor's marketing and communications manager Stirling Cobb said Powdr Corp., the resort's parent company, has “made leadership changes” at Mt. Bachelor and that Rathbun “will be stepping out of the organization to pursue other interests.”

“Over the course of eight years, Dave was able to make significant improvements to the mountain and overall culture here at Mt. Bachelor,” the statement reads. “He will be missed by many, and all of us wish him the best with his future endeavors.”

Rathbun took over as president and general manager in June 2008. Previously, Rathbun spent almost three years as vice president of marketing and sales at Powdr-owned Killington Resort and Pico Mountain,Vt.

During Rathbun's tenure, Mt. Bachelor significantly expanded its offseason offerings, adding a disc golf course and trails for summertime hiking and downhill mountain biking.

Other improvements the resort pursued during the Rathbun era have not yet come to pass. The U.S. Forest Service approved an updated master plan for the resort in 2013 that among other things would allow Mt. Bachelor to add a new lift and a new lodge to replace the Sunrise Lodge. The resort has cleared some trees for the project but has yet to announce when construction might begin.
