SAM Magazine--Donner Summit, CA, September 9, 2005--Joining several ski areas across the country, Boreal Mountain Resort will devote all of its slopes to freestyle terrain for the upcoming season. In total, the area will spend $700,000 on the new terrain, which will include 100 rails, jumps and funboxes, as well as a 450-foot-long superpipe that will be serviced by a new Zaugg. The resort also purchased two more grooming vehicles for the park.

The all-mountain terrain park, the first in northern California, will offer features from each of its nine lifts, both day and night. The resort was also quick to point out, however, that it will retain "its traditional downhill terrain, as well as beginner offerings."

Of course they are..Duh,

With only 500 ft. of vertical why wouldn't they go 100% terrain parks...they really don't have much else to offer do they?
Might as well cash in on the one thing that you can do with 500 ft of vert. right

There is a much larger article about Boreal's plan at Transworldsnowboarding.com, including quotes from big time riders Andy Finch and David Benedek. I think Boreal is smart to make such a bold move. Could be a small mecca for freestyle. Question is, do freestylers drop as much coin as families and alpine skiiers?

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

SOUNDS LIKE A MARKETING GIMMICK, IT'S PRETTY TOUGH TO HAVE JIBS AND FEATURES AND ALSO HAVE THE SLOPES OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. IT USUALLY REQUIRES A COMMITTMENT TO ONE OR THE OTHER. BUT THEY DON'T WANT TO LOSE THEIR CORE MARKET. MAYBE THEY ARE NOT SURE WHAT THAT IS?

Huh?

How do you "devote all of your slopes to freestyle terrain" and retain your downhill and beginner offerings? Can somebody clarify this?
