SAM Magazine-Boulder, Colo., Nov. 18, 2011-In a sign of health for outdoor sports, preliminary Outdoor RetailTRAK data from Leisure Trends Group indicate that outdoor retail sales gained 14 percent over October 2010, spurred by especially strong apparel sales. Sales continued on pace with September's record total, as outdoor stores posted largest-ever October dollar volume.

All sales channels contributed to the month's overall growth, as chain, specialty and online sales all saw their best October ever. "Outdoor enthusiasts are not only shopping in their local outdoor specialty stores but also taking advantage of both outdoor chain and online retailers," said Scott Jaeger, senior analyst at Leisure Trends Group. "This tracks with active outdoor consumers' holiday plans."
