Snow King Resort Up For Sale
SAM Magazine-Jackson, Wyo., Oct. 11, 2011-Snow King Resort in downtown Jackson is for sale after a non-profit community group tried but failed to step in and run the area.
Operations at the resort have been running $500,000 and $1 million in the red. Summer activities, including an alpine slide and miniature golf course, help offset winter losses. A hotel, conference center and other resort amenities at the base bring in about $3 million a year and make the operation as a whole profitable, according to managing partner Manuel Lopez.
Snow King, which opened in 1939, is located right on the edge of town. The mountain has 1,500 feet of vertical, three lifts and about 400 acres of skiable terrain.
Developing additional summer activities, such mountain biking and zip line courses, could further increase the profitability of the entire resort, Lopez said. Jackson's summer tourism traffic is more than great enough to support additional activities.
The area has no set asking price. Lopez said that's because any sales price will depend on the assets a buyer might want to purchase along with the ski area, such as the hotel and conference center.
There are no plans to shut down the area if no buyer is found. However, the area will close on Mondays this winter, and run with reduced hours Tuesdays through Sundays. The season pass price has been cut by $10, to $149, for purchases made through Oct. 31.
