SAM Magazine—Wanaka, New Zealand., May 28, 2013—New Zealand’s Snow Park will not be opening for the 2013 season. The manager of the past three years, the Synnott family, did not renew its lease, and management reverted to Sam Lee, who founded the park in 2002. Lee is now seeking capital with which to reopen the area, known for its terrain park, in the near future.

“This is one of the hardest decisions I have had to make, [but] with the level of functioning assets, I know we cannot provide the world class terrain we have become known for,” Lee said in a statement.

“We had hoped we could get on our feet sooner, but we needed more time than we have had,” Lee noted. He resumed control of the resort on April 1. Efforts to reopen for 2013 “have been hampered by the volume of work and capital required,” his statement said.

The Lee family, which has been involved in ski area development in New Zealand for more than 30 years, may yet operate the area on an ad hoc basis this winter.
