TENNEY AUCTIONED
Tenney Mountain, N.H., was sold in a foreclosure auction for $500,000 to an investment company that plans to resell the ski area. The investment company was the only bidder at the auction and they also snatched up neighboring parcels for $350,000.


INTRAWEST MOVING HEADQUARTERS
Intrawest is moving its headquarters to the Denver metro area in the coming off-season. The transition could begin as early as July.

The decision to move came after Intrawest spun off Whistler Blackcomb in a public offering last fall, reducing its stake in Canada. The company does have flagship operations at Colorado resorts Steamboat and Winter Park.

The new offices will include Intrawest’s senior management team and real estate group as well as several other departments. Club Intrawest and Intrawest Resort Club Group operations will remain in Vancouver.



SELKIRK CELEBRATES 30 YEARS
Selkirk College in British Columbia is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its Ski Resort Operations and Management program (SROAM). The celebration will take place at the 2011 Canada West Ski Areas Association spring conference. Over 800 people have passed through the SROAM program, many of whom have established careers in the winter resort industry.

The event will also be used as a fundraiser for the program. For further information, contact Bob Dodge at bdodge@selkirk.ca.


OBITUARIES
Paul Augustine, founder of Afton Alps ski area in 1963, died at the age of 79 on January 1, 2011. For more on Augustine’s operating philosophy, see page 10.

George Petritz, 93, died December 23, 2010. Petritz ran Crystal Mountain Resort, Mich., from 1966 to 1985, when his son-in-law and daughter, Jim and Chris MacInnes, took over.


Leif Borgeson, Arapahoe Basin’s snow safety director, died while hiking Aspen Highlands. Borgeson was 50. cont.


PEOPLE
Canada West Ski Areas Association announced the appointment of David Lynn to president and CEO, replacing retiring Jimmie Spencer.

Whitetail Resort, Pa., promoted Kristin McKenrick to marketing coordinator. The resort also hired Jessica Sharpe as marketing assistant, Rodney Malcom as snow tubing manager and Chet Naylor as the terrain park and halfpipe manager.

Deb Moore, director of marketing at Waterville Valley, is leaving after 28 years.

Winter Park, Colo., hired Cynthia Harder as director of sales.

Powdr Corp announced the promotion of Tim Brennwald to senior vice president and chief development officer.


Julie Maurer is the new VP of marketing and sales at Squaw Valley, Calif.

Alyeska Resort, Alaska, promoted Ben Habecker to ski patrol director. Heather Thamm was hired as assistant patrol manager and Michelle Jedlicka was promoted to night patrol supervisor.


SUPPLIER NEWS
Leitner Technologies has purchased 100 percent of the Swedish company Lenko Snow AB along with developing an active participation with the South Tyrolean snowmaking company Demac.

Phillippe Gouzes has become the senior VP of international marketing at Burton Snowboards.

Dennis Schulz has left Johnson Controls for other opportunities.

High Peaks Chairlift Painting, LLC announced the addition of Scott Jackson to the team.

Siriusware, Inc., was recognized by its employees as one of the top 10 small business workplaces in New Mexico.


Snow Park Technologies, LLC is now owned and operated by founder Chris “Gunny” Gunnarson and wife Genevieve Gunnarson.
