SAM Magazine-Bakerville, Colo., Oct. 13, 2005- Mid-winter conditions arrived last weekend in Colorado, allowing Loveland Ski Area, situated atop the Continental Divide, to open for the 2005-06 ski season on Friday, Oct. 14. Loveland will be the first resort in North America to open for the sixth year in a row. The area will offer skiing and riding on one 1,000-vertical-foot top-to-bottom groomed run. The minimum snow base will vary between 18 and 21 inches. In addition, a small terrain park will be set up near the base of the mountain for eager jibbers.

The latest snowstorm brought nearly a foot and a half to Loveland, intensifying the race between the area and Arapahoe Basin to see which would open first. The storm, combined with Loveland's snowmaking before and after, won the day.

Arapahoe, which reported three-foot snow drifts at the base of the mountain earlier this week, is scheduled to open by Oct. 21.
