SAM Magazine-Mammoth Lakes, Calif., Jan. 30, 2007-With one of the strangest winters on record making things tough for resort operators on both the west and east coasts, June Mountain shuttered its doors for the season on Jan. 29 due to a lack of snow. The mountain currently has a mere 3-18 inch base, and a reopening is unlikely even if the Sierra Mountains receive one of the regions' epic storms. Some employees will stay on the job to assist with the shutdown.

Season passes will be honored at nearby Mammoth Mountain, which is also facing difficult times due to a lack of natural snowfall.

The announcement is the latest bad news in a winter filled with rain and unseasonably warm temperatures on the East Coast, a lack of snowfall in the Sierra Nevada mountains and record snowfalls in the Pacific Northwest. While the Rocky Mountains have not seen substantial amounts of snow through January, resorts such as Breckenridge enjoyed solid November and December snowfall, allowing for decent conditions through the Christmas and New Year's holiday season. \
