SAM Magazine—Wintergreen, Va., Dec. 31, 2021—Due to unseasonably warm temperatures, Wintergreen Resort in Virginia temporarily suspended skiing and snowboarding operations Dec. 29.

WintergreenHN“While we wish our mountain was completely covered in snow with all outlets and operations in full swing, we are weathering the weather (or lack thereof), with our operations teams watching the hourly forecast to flip the snowmaking switch,” said the resort’s blog.

The resort opened for the season Dec. 23 with one top-to-bottom beginner slope. That opening was marked by a scaled-down food and beverage operation, as a result of a Dec. 22 Covid outbreak among staff.

Sunday, Jan. 2, promises temperatures cold enough for snowmaking, and Wintergreen plans to reopen its slopes as soon as possible after it gets the snow guns firing. In the meantime, the resort’s tubing, New Year’s Eve events, dining, shopping, aquatics and fitness center, indoor tennis, and golf remain open.
