SAM Magazine—Big Bear Lake, Calif., Jan. 20, 2023—Alterra Mountain Company has closed on its acquisition of Southern California’s Snow Valley Mountain Resort. SnowValleySnow Valley will join the operations of Alterra’s Big Bear Mountain Resort, located 11 miles away in Big Bear Lake, which includes the Bear Mountain and Snow Summit ski areas. 

“The acquisition of Snow Valley Mountain Resort is a continuation of our ongoing mission to build a premier portfolio of great mountains in robust markets,” said Alterra CEO Jared Smith. “We are excited to invest essential capital to enhance the on-site employee and guest experience to further strengthen our offerings to skiers and riders in Southern California.”

Alterra, which purchased Snow Summit and Bear Mountain in 2017, says the new “three-mountain experience” will provide skiers and riders the opportunity to progress on a variety of terrain with an enhanced focus on beginners. Snow Valley has received accolades as a family-friendly resort and is known for its beginner-friendly terrain and learning center. It offers 240 acres of skiable terrain, 1,041 feet of vertical, and a 7,841-foot summit. Home to SoCal’s only six-person chairlift, it also offers a chairlift-accessed sledding area. 

“Snow Valley Mountain Resort has been a treasured destination since 1924 and together we will continue its incredible legacy,” said Snow Valley vice president and general manager Kevin Somes.

With the addition, Alterra operates 16 mountain destinations in six states and three Canadian provinces, including six in California. The Ikon Pass and Big Bear Mountain Resort season passes will be accepted at Snow Valley starting Feb. 20, 2023.
