Pub Memo :: July 2023

Cause for Celebration

After facing many challenges in recent years—from the pandemic, wildfires, staffing issues and burnout—this past winter’s record visits, revenues, and snowfall were a welcome boon. It’s important to recognize why and how we were successful, and who played a role in our success. Whether it was your office teams who helped shovel some of that record snow, or your lift crews that ran the record number of new lifts that went in this past year, or the snowmakers who scrambled early in the season when there was no snow, everyone played a part.

Some of these hardworking tinkerers and thinkers are featured in our annual “10 Under 30” (p. 44). These peer-nominated 20-somethings represent the many changemakers coming up through our ranks nationwide. We also check in with some past “10 Under 30” profilees to see where they are now, and how they currently view the industry.

jul23 pub memoOn a personal note, we are lucky to have two former “10 Under 30” honorees on the team at SAM, Katie Brinton and Jack Fagone. (I promise, we do not pick through the nominees to add to our team!) Jack wears many hats, including circulation director, research editor, and manager of The Summit Series and Cutter’s Camp. Katie is our senior editor extraordinaire, and words are her magic power. We are very proud of her recent recognition by NASJA for her article, “Fire on the Mountain” (January 2022).

Coincidentally, another “10 Under 30” alum, Inntopia’s Gregg Blanchard (Class of 2012), penned “The Focused Future of Direct Mail” (p. 38), in which he looks at some creative approaches to direct mail marketing.

Other articles here will make you think, such as “That’s The Way We Do Things” (p. 30) and “The Risk of Not Investing in Tech” (p. 54), as well as an unusual “Mountain Spy” query (p. 28). We also showcase some of our readers, such as leaders at Bogus Basin and Bridger Bowl in “Profitable NonProfits” (p. 60), and our industry’s experts, including maintenance building aficionado Gary Pavlick in “Building for Efficiency” (co-written by our own Rick Kahl, p. 50).

This issue has something for nearly everyone on your team. So, please share it with your colleagues—and suggest they reach out to Jack for our new-subscriber discount (jack@saminfo.com).
