Push to The Latest: No
SAM Magazine-Portland, Me., May 15, 2008-The state of Maine, along with New Hampshire areas Loon Mountain and Bretton Woods, has joined the chorus of Eastern areas announcing record visits last winter.

Maine's ski and snowboard industry tallied 1.42 million visits during the 2007-08 winter season. That beats the previous record of 1.36 million visits set in 2000-01, and represents a 25 percent increase over the previous winter.

According to Ski Maine Association executive director Greg Sweetser, the industry benefited from record snowfalls, efficient snowmaking, major capital investments, vibrant community areas, and extensive media coverage throughout the winter.

Double-digit increases in visits were recorded at nearly all Maine resorts. The state's two busiest areas, Sugarloaf and Sunday River, saw an increase of 21 percent in skier visits. The strength of the Canadian dollar contributed to the strong season, as Canadian visitors increased 27 percent at the two areas.

"I believe that another contributing factor in this year's growth is the continued focus on people's lack of exercise, especially in winter," added Sweetser. "Maine ski areas view themselves as one antidote to the growing obesity crisis. In addition to the efforts of Maine downhill ski areas and cross country centers, organizations like WinterKids and the Maine Winter Sports Center are bringing outdoor activities to all Maine children."

According to Chris Ellms, Bretton Woods director of ski operations, "This marks the second record ski season in a row for Bretton Woods. Lift ticket sales were up 8 percent over the record established last season, and season pass sales for 2008-09 are off to a strong start." \
