SAM Magazine - Aspen, Colo., December 15, 2008 - In a tragic final note to a December Sunday which saw an inbounds avalanche kill a Snowbird skier as well as several other incidents involving avalanches both inside and outside the ropes, a former Aspen Ski Patroller died in a slide outside of Aspen Mountain late Sunday. Fifty-two-year-old Cory Brettman perished in a slide approximately 30 yards wide and 100 yards long in the Power Line area, a popular backcountry run. The unpatrolled area is outside Aspen Mountain's boundary but inside the resort's permit area.

Brettman, who worked as a patroller on Aspen Mountain from 1981 to 2006, leaves behind a wife, Killeen, who is also a former Aspen Ski Co. employee. The cause of death remains under investigation, but trauma is suspected.
