SAM Magazine-Golden, B.C., Aug. 3, 2010-Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is opening a fourth bowl for winter 2010-11, its tenth season of operation. Known as Super Bowl, the new terrain will introduce "an epic selection of advanced and expert skiable terrain," the area said in a release.

The expansion demonstrates "the resort commitment to improving the overall guest experience," said Steve Paccagnan, Kicking Horse president and CEO. It is also an example of the continuing trend to offer more "sidecountry" or ungroomed terrain, especially at Western resorts.

Super Bowl is south of the existing ski area boundary and within the resort's original Controlled Recreational Area, though it has not been open before now. The bowl serves up of north-, south- and east-facing slopes. The terrain in Super Bowl covers up to 1,000 vertical feet and includes more than 15 new advanced and expert chutes, bring Kicking Horse's total to 85. The entire bowl has an off-piste, out-of-bounds feel, but is now part of a controlled inbounds environment.

The project also includes a new summer hiking trail along the Bowl Over ridge to the Super Bowl saddle, providing easy access to views of the Columbia Valley, Canyon Creek and alpine meadows. Interpretive signage will help educate guests on alpine travel and the local topography.
