SAM Magazine—Queenstown, New Zealand, April 11, 2024—Following a 10-year stint as a high school principal and a “gap year” skiing and biking around the world, Steve Hall is returning to the ski industry as the ski area manager of The Remarkables, located outside of Queenstown on the South Island of New Zealand.Remarkables

“Steve brings a breadth of experience to the table, and I believe he’s the perfect fit for The Remarkables,” said Paul Anderson, CEO of NZSki, which owns and operates The Remarkables, Coronet Peak, and Mt. Hutt. “Having him lead our team is an exciting prospect as we look to the future.”

A Queenstown local, Hall began his career working in The Remarkables’ rental department in 1986. He later worked as a ski instructor, led glacier tours, rafting excursions, and heli-ski trips, and served as a field training leader in Antarctica.

Prior to his tenure as principal of Wakatipu High School, Hall was school director at Outward Bound and CEO of the Halberg Trust, a New Zealand foundation that supports sports and recreation for people with physical disabilities. He has an MBA from the University of Canterbury, a BA in economics and English, and a teaching diploma, and has completed courses in leadership and nonprofit management at Harvard University.

“I’m genuinely feeling really excited,” said Hall. “It’s a great role, and it’s a really important role because The Remarkables is so precious not only to NZSki, but also to locals and Queenstown as the town and industry grows. I know there’s going to be challenges along the way, but being part of figuring things out is what I’m really looking forward to.”

Hall will begin his job as general manager of The Remarkables on April 22. He succeeds Ross Lawrence, who will step down after 16 years in the role and 40 years in the ski industry.
