SAM Magazine--October 25, 2011--After several council meetings, the City Council in Ashland has agreed to give up its permit for the Mt. Ashland Ski Area, Ore., to the Mt. Ashland Association, the nonprofit association that runs the area. According to the "Mail Tribune," the Association will apply for the permit from the Forest Service and is required by the City to raise at least $2.5 million for a proposed expansion of the area. The City also dissolved its existing lease with the Association, which will, conversely, give the Council greater control over the expansion in its capacity as the local governing body.

The expansion, which includes new ski trails, a chairlift, parking and several other projects, still faces opposition from environmental groups and needs approval from the Forest Service and other agencies.
