MORE RESORTS OPENING FOR THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY

SAM Magazine—Mt. Hood, Ore., Nov. 21, 2012—Despite a relatively dry and warm start to the ski season nationwide, many resorts are opening as planned during the traditional Thanksgiving holiday period.

Resorts in the Pacific Northwest have been aided by significant snowfalls in the past week. Alyeska, Alaska, and Crystal Mountain, Wash., opened today, joining open areas Mt. Baker, and Stevens Pass, Wash., and Timberline, Ore. Mt. Bachelor and Mt. Hood Meadows, Ore., follow suit tomorrow, as does Blackcomb, B.C. 490 North and Mission Ridge, Wash., both open on Friday, Nov. 23.

In California, 10 resorts are open, and several are offering top to bottom terrain. At Tahoe, Mt. Rose started up today, and several areas are offering top-to-bottom terrain. Others planning to open by the weekend include China Peak, Homewood, Sierra at Tahoe, and Mt. Baldy. Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort, Nev., also opens this week.

In the Rockies, several more areas start to turn the lifts this week. Among them: Eldora, Crested Butte, Snowmass, Telluride, Durango, Beaver Creek, and Steamboat, Colo.; Canyons, Utah, which joins several other open areas in the state; Red Lodge and Big Sky, Mont.; Grand Targhee and Jackson Hole, Wyo.; and Lookout Pass, Schweitzer, Sun Valley, and Silver Mountain, Ida. In New Mexico, Taos will open this week, joining Red River and Sipapu.

In the East, northern resorts have had favorable snowmaking weather that has allowed several more areas to open for the season: Mount Snow, Stratton, Stowe, and Sugarbush, Vt.; Wildcat (Nov. 22), Bretton Woods, Cranmore (Nov. 23) and Waterville Valley, N.H. In upstate New York, Gore Mountain opens this weekend, and Whiteface reopens, both on Friday. Jiminy Peak, Mass., also plans to reopen Nov. 23. And Snowshoe, W.Va., opened today. Several other areas across the Northeast, though, have had to delay openings due to unfavorable weather patterns.
