Support U.S. ski teams
For the 1976-1977 season, 125 transferable passes will be sold nationally at $1,500 each. Participating areas will honor the pass when presented at their ticket windows by issuing one daily lift ticket per day. All NSAA member areas have already been solicited to participate, and should return their cards to NSAA as soon as possible. The key to success is the participation by all ski areas in honoring the pass. We sincerely hope your ski area will get behind this fund raising effort.
Foreign ski areas may join NSAA
Over the past year many foreign ski areas have shown an interest in becomming members of NSAA. With many NSAA projects such as, wage and salary studies, and tramway codes, not directly applicable to a foreign ski area operator, they are primarily interested in receiving our communications and keeping in touch with our methods of doing business and how we operate our resorts.
A change in ByLaws was voted and approved at the 14th NSAA National Convention which allows foreign ski areas to join NSAA by paying minimum dues (Currently $100.) This membership category has no vote in the affairs of the Association.
New directors named to NSAA board
Two new directors were added to the NSAA Board at the 14th Annual Convention; Ray Johnson, President of Alpine Meadows, California, and Bill Riley, Director of Marketing for many years with the Mt. Mansfield Company, Stowe, Vermont. With considerable experience in ski area operations, both are a welcome addition to the Board.
Returning to the Board after a one-year absence in Tom Corcoran, President of Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, filling the vacancy left by John Christie who “retired from the ski business.” Re-elected for full second terms were; Carl Reynolds from Multorpor, Oregon, and Phil Gravink, of Peek n Peak, New York.
NSAA supports East and West trade shows
At the Annual Meeting of the NSAA Board of Directors the following Motion was passed:
“THAT NSAA support and sponsor two Winter Regional Trade shows only, and that one be held in the East and one in the West.”
This decision was based on a survey conducted with the ski area suppliers prior to the National Convention. The majority of suppliers felt that two winter on-snow shows, plus the National Convention and Trade Show was sufficient to meet their needs.
Next wnter NSAA will sponsor one show in conjunction with the Eastern Ski Areas Association, and one in Colorado with the winter meeting of Colorado Ski Country/USA. Dates and locations for both shows will be announced in the near future.
Conniff named DATO director
Cal Conniff, NSAA Executive Director, was recently appointed to The Board of Directors of Discover America Travel Organization based in Washington, D.C.
DATO is an independent organization that represents the entire tourist industry in America. It has a powerful voice on Capitol Hill and speaks for all of the diverse elements of tourism. Cal’s appointment will further strengthen the ski industry’s position at the federal level.
NSAA economic study
The one single document that is most important to NSAA is the Economic Analysis of North American Ski Areas. It is the only document on our industry’s vital statistics. The information contained in this study is vitally important in our deliberations with the Forest Service, SBA, and the preparation of testimony for government hearings on legislation that could affect the ski industry.
All ski areas will soon be receiving a survey questionnaire for the NSAA Economic Analysis Study from the Business Research Division of the University of Colorado. We ask that you please take the time to fill it out and return it to the University. We need the participation of all ski areas, large and small to make this study a complete success.
Again, we are most fortunate to have PROFESSOR Charles Goeldner, and his staff conduct this survey for us. The Study, under the direction of the NSAA Economic Study Committee, and Jim Bartlett, Vice President of Vail Associates, Chairman. Committee members are:

GRFS review underway
A complete study of the Graduated Rate Fee System will be conducted at the request of the Forest Service and the urging of NSAA. A special NSAA Committee has been established to work with Forest Service officials in Washington to conduct the review study with the objective being to make the system less complicated, easier to understand, and where inequities exist; to correct them. The first meeting on this project will take place within a month.
