It’s not that Jerry has lacked for honors. He has received (and earned!) just about every award and citation our industry and sport can bestow, regional and national. And I’m not going to recite all his accomplishments. (That would be asking too much of us, even if we do buy ink by the barrel.)
Rather, I want to express my thanks for the sensitive and wise advice he has so willingly given to me over the years, and also for the encouragement he has given to this magazine, even on those rare occasions when we were editorially at odds with him. (No one should have to struggle as hard as he did when he was our association president to look after the ski area interests in the controversial days of merger.)
One of Jerry’s avowed purposes in stepping down after 22 years as Winter Park’s CEO is to pursue a dream: “It has always been a dream of mine,” he says, “to ski every major resort in the United States. I’m going to make that happen next season.”
It sounds here like grist for the editorial mill. I hope you’ll keep a diary, Jerry. We’ll block out the space for you in SAM and perhaps you can snag the Harold Hirsch Award for ski writing for your trophy case.
