Ted Farwell highlighted the findings of the study he had conducted for the U.S. Department of Commerce entitled, “The Skier Market, Northeast North America.” He found that 447,600 skiers who skied in that region during the winter of 1962-63–a figure somewhat below what others believed, and less than 1 percent of the total population in the geographic region. He found they had spent $143 million for transportation, lodging, entertainment and lift tickets. He found that uphill capacity had showed a 20 percent per year rate of increase for ten years, and that the number of skiers was growing at some rate not in excess of 16.7 percent annually…

Vail announces plans for its second gondola…Sugarbush unveils its plans for Sugarbush West, 17 miles from the Salt Lake City airport… The firm of Barringer & Williams is formed to handle the NSAA insurance program…Joseph Zoline is cited in the Aspen Times as “holding the opinion that Telluride is potentially another Aspen. He reportedly purchased 4.200 acres on which he eventually plans a winter resort… The U.S. Ski Association has pledged 100 percent support for the Mineral King Recreation Area. The Forest Service reports it may be in operation by 1973 with 10 lifts. By 1978, it is anticipated, 22 lifts–some of them chairlifts and some ot them gondolas–will serve some 8,000 skiers in five basins…
The Sierra Ski Areas Association will pay up to $100 for the arrest and conviction of anyone caught stealing ski equipment at one of the 23 member areas.
