Mountains Don’t Move Themselves

Winter 1976 Issue

Letters

Sir:

On behalf of the Recreation and Leisure Studies Department at Lyndon State College, I wish to express my appreciation for the recent article in the Ski Area Management Magazine.

The publicity and support was a big lift to the students and to the efforts of the program in Ski Area Management.

As you probably know your publication is heavily utilized in the Ski Area Management instructional courses. Thank you once again for you continued support.

James J. McCarthy, Chairman
Dept. Rec. & Leisure Studies

Sir:

The articles in the Fall issue of Keil, Hitchcock and Nelson were interesting, and perhaps needed.

Since my graduation in 1975 from the RFM program at Johnson State College, it has been impossible; what we heard in classrooms hasn’t worked in reality. Job hunting has brought me to a “dead-end.”

I have not been asking for top-level jobs, yet one resort’s personnel director wrote that all hiring was done from within the company.

If I am to acquire experience, I must be hired!

The environmental movement in Vermont, and throughout the United States has created a political climate that has stopped ski area development. If we are asking people to ski more, again, or start in the sport, ski management should wage a campaign to motivate people, the demands would be so great that environmentalists would have to take a “back seat.” We had environmental courses at Johnson that were taught by arch-conservatives — “we’re here, slam the door on future mountain and lake development” types.

Sir:

We greatly appreciated having our department listed in the array of colleges and universities working within the field of commercial recreation. These programs have been needed and well received by commercial recreation enterprises, especially ski areas.

We also recognize the professional and educational dimension of your publication. It is extremely valuable to the ski business as well as insuring a highly professional attitude.
