Mountains Don’t Move Themselves

July 1992 Issue

Letters

Sir:

Shun the WUM

I fear Ski Area Management has been conned by Mr. Bachman, or maybe Mr. Bachman has been conned himself.

His description of People for the West and other groups advocating sensible multiple use of public lands as being radical organizations is straight from the literature of the mainline no-growth organizations who are trying to discredit these multiple use groups.

Mr Bachman’s advice to the ski industry to stay away from the Wise Use Movement is part of the no-growthers’ strategy to fragment the different users of public lands so there is no consolidated effort to fight the groups who want everyone off public lands, except of course themselves.

Only sex sells skiing

Sir:

In response to Seth Masia’s article, “Only Sex Sells Skiing” (May), is Mr. Masia familiar with reality today and what the initials A.I.D.S. stand for?

The 60’s and 70’s may have been great, but those days have passed on and so will a new generation of “horny adolescents,” as Mr. Masia terms the latest teen boom. Encouraging young people to engage in behavior that can be deadly is not a good marketing tool. After all, skiers have to be healthy and alive to enjoy the sport!

Michigan Promotion

SAM has ably chronicled the rise of state and regional promotions in our industry. I am pleased to report that Michigan, likewise, is starting to enjoy encouraging success in this direction. Michigan’s Learn-To-Ski Program, labeled “Discover Michigan Skiing” has two major corporate sponsors, and is running 50 percent ahead of forecast.

To its considerable credit, USIA over recent years has encouraged the organizing of state ski associations. In Michigan, special recognition is due Jim Bartlett, GM at Nubs Nob, Harbor Springs, and his industry colleagues for putting the state organization together and for the herculean job of launching a mighty successful state ski promotion.

We members of the ski industry in Michigan owe Jim and his group a resounding vote of thanks for this accomplishment.

May Cover Faulted

We acknowledge receipt of a letter from Jon Mauch, lift manager at Breckenridge, and immediate past chairman of Rocky Mt. Lift Association. He calls us to task for the lack of a safety harness on the man working on a lift tower (front cover, May issue). It is an important and appropriate point — as are the points made in response by author, and safety-conscious veteran rigger, Bob Diener. We are holding all this until the larger September issue when we can give this important subject the space it deserves. In the meantime, follow OSHA guidelines! — The Editor

Correction

To our readers who were stood on their heads by Joe Cousins’ article about pump technology in the May issue, as well as to Joe himself, the editor apologizes for running the pump diagram upside-down … Hey, we were just checking to see if anyone was paying attention. (And if you believe that …) — The Editor
