The occasion was the second annual gathering of the International Skiing History Association at Sun Valley, Id., in late March. About 30 members plus spouses were present and besides skiing, they participated in things historical.
Wolfgang Lert presented a video conversation with Otto Steiner, Gretchen and Don Fraser and Bill Janss recalled Sun Valley’s past and John Jay shared old movie memories. There were slide shows, panel discussions and a showing of “Der Weisse Rausch” (“The White Ecstasy”), a 1931 German movie that has recently been converted to video for sale and preservation.
Mason Beekley was reelected president and treasurer of the association and Glenn Parkinson was reelected vice president and secretary. Plans were laid for a meeting next spring and an enlarged membership roll. The association now has 700 members in 14 countries. Earlier in March, at a meeting at Sugarbush, Vt., the ISHA initiated an annual lifetime achievement award with the first honors going to John Henry Auran, who has been writing about skiing for 35 years, and Sir Arnold Lunn, the British inventor of slalom racing and organizer of world championship racing in 1931.
