November 1996 Issue

The Unofficial Guide to Skiing in the West

By Lito Tejada-Flores, Peter Shelton, Seth Masia and Bob Sehlinger. 692 pp. New York, New York: Macmillan Travel, $14

Why is this book unofficial? Because, say the authors, it has not been approved or reviewed by any of the ski resorts profiled. Thus, they can point to congested slopes, bad food, poor grooming and other offenses observed at the areas.

Actually, there isn’t much negative criticism of the 50 areas covered except for a few comments about long lift lines, poor signage and flat runouts, but even these can be substantiated. The authors either live at or near the resorts they write about or have explored them thoroughly for articles that have appeared in ski publications.

What is most notable, however, about this book is that it is thorough. In fact, it offers almost more than anyone would want to know about a ski resort —except, possibly, skiers who are going there and want to know what to do, what to avoid and how to be cool: or those who have been there and want to know what they missed and the significance of what they actually did experience.

Of course, the management personnel of any of the areas reviewed might also want to take a peek to see what these four well-travelled writers have to say about their resorts. It might be revealing.
