SAM Magazine—Fabius, N.Y., Feb. 24, 2022—Intermountain Management president Peter Harris acquired Toggenburg Mountain in August 2021 for $750,000, and immediately shuttered the ski area to reduce competition for his company’s other two upstate New York ski areas, Song Mountain and Labrador Mountain.Toggenburg According to a report from Syracuse.com/The Post-Standard, Harris has recently put Toggenburg up for sale, asking $1.5 million for the 160-acre property and the existing assets, including a 23,000-square-foot base lodge and chairlifts.

Shortly after acquiring Toggenburg, Harris told SAM that the property was for sale, and the chairlifts were available to purchase separately. At the time, he said he would not entertain offers from potential buyers who wanted to reopen the mountain as a ski area, and there would be a covenant on the property preventing that.

However, Harris recently told Syracuse.com/The Post-Standard that he’s “kind of warming up to the property,” and he may not restrict the sale only to buyers who agree not to reopen it as a ski area. He also said he hasn’t ruled out retaining ownership and reopening the ski area if there is enough business to support it.

In August, Harris told SAM, the idea behind the Toggenburg acquisition was “primarily to purchase market share without the associated expenses of opening another ski hill. We’re trying to drive the same guests to two mountains instead of three.”

Toggenburg reportedly had a record season in 2020-21, but it draws from the same Syracuse market as Song and Labrador—the three ski areas are located within a 12-mile radius of each other. Song and Labrador have reportedly been busy this winter despite inconsistent snow.

Harris has not listed Toggenburg with a realtor, nor is he actively marketing it. There is a “For Sale” sign on the resort’s sign at the end of the access road. He has not yet received any offers.
