SAM Magazine—Banff, Alberta, Canada, Aug. 9, 2023— A power outage on the Banff Gondola, owned by attraction and hospitality company Pursuit,  stranded hundreds of sightseers at the top of Sulphur Mountain Monday night, leading some to eventually hike down in the middle of the night.

The Globe and Mail newspaper suggested that as many as 400 people were stuck at the top of the gondola for an estimated five or six hours before a group of volunteer rescuers offered to guide them down the mountain around 2 a.m. A video posted by the paper shows tourists and rescue personnel descending the 7,486-foot mountain on foot using headlamps and lanterns.

Resort staff were on hand to offer gondola ticket refunds and assisted guests stranded at the top of the gondola by handing out emergency blankets, warm drinks, and snacks while they waited in restaurants and the gift shop.

SAM will continue to follow this story.

Correction, Aug. 14, 2023: An earlier version of this story misidentified Discover Banff Tours as the operator of the gondola. Attraction and hospitality company Pursuit is the owner and operator of the Banff Gondola.
