A gondola cabin fell from the line this morning and tumbled down a slope at a ski resort in Engelberg, Switzerland, killing the only passenger, who police identified as a 61-year-old woman from the region.
The two-stage Titlis Xpress gondola stopped following the detachment, which occurred above the midstation shortly before 11 a.m. in the Trübsee area, according to police. More than 100 passengers were safely evacuated from the other cabins on the line.
Police are investigating the cause of the incident. Swiss media reported that several other lifts at the ski area were closed Wednesday due to high winds, which was also the reason a ski race was cancelled on short notice. The Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology of Switzerland had issued a level 2 wind warning for “moderate danger,” according to reports.
Titlis-Bahnen CEO Norbert Patt extended his condolences to the victim’s family and said the lift company is cooperating with the Swiss Accident Investigation Board (SAIB). SAIB will determine when the lift can resume operation following its investigation of the incident.
The Titlis Xpress was installed in 2015.
