SAM Magazine—Denver, March 11, 2026—JaredSmithJared Smith plans to step down from his role as chief executive officer of Alterra Mountain Company at the end of this season. An exact end date was not shared.

Smith joined Alterra as president in June 2021, reporting to then-CEO Rusty Gregory. He previously served as president and global chairman of Ticketmaster. He succeeded Gregory as CEO on Aug. 1, 2022.

During his time at Alterra, the company grew its portfolio of ski areas as well as related businesses. Since June 2021, Alterra has acquired Snow Valley, Calif.; Schweitzer, Idaho; Arapahoe Basin, Colo.; Ski Butlers rental service; Purcell Heli-Skiing and Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing in British Columbia; and partnered with Aspen Skiing Company to buy e-commerce provider Aspenware. The company has invested more than $1.5 billion in capital improvements at its ski areas under Smith’s watch as Alterra president and as CEO. Alterra’s Ikon Pass has grown to include access to 70 ski areas around the world.

“Jared has been a valued leader at Alterra Mountain Company for many years, and we are grateful for his leadership and partnership,” said Eric Resnick, chairman of the board of Alterra Mountain Company and CEO of KSL Capital Partners. “Over the course of his tenure, he has made a lasting impact during a period of continued growth and operational advancement, while ensuring the company maintained the culture and commitment to our communities that make Alterra special. We thank Jared for his contributions and wish Jared well as he chooses what to pursue next.”

During the transition, an executive committee of the board will function as an “office of the CEO,” the company said, comprising ownership representatives from KSL Capital Partners and Henry Crown & Company, as well as former CEO Gregory, to lead the company’s day-to-day operations through the end of the season and until a new CEO is appointed. Smith will “serve as a resource to the office of the CEO over the next year to support a seamless transition,” according to a press release about Smith’s departure.

The board of directors will launch a search process to identify Smith’s successor. No expected timeline was given.

Resnick said he and the board are proud of Alterra’s accomplishments and continued investment in the guest experience, “all while honoring the mountains, the communities and the people that define each of our destinations. We embrace our stewardship of the mountains and the communities we call home. The best is yet to come.”
