SAM Magazine—Broomfield, Colo., May 27, 2025—Kirsten Lynch has stepped down as chief executive officer of Vail Resorts, and Rob Katz, who served in the role from 2006 to 2021, is returning to the role, effective immediately.

HN RobKatzLynch had led the company since November 2021, succeeding Katz after his 16-year tenure as CEO. During her time at the helm, she oversaw the expansion of the Epic Pass, spearheaded significant technology investments, and steered the company through labor and operational headwinds. She will stay on as an advisor through February 2026.

“As Vail Resorts continues to execute its strategic priorities and transformational initiatives, the board believes now is the right time for this leadership transition,” said board member Bruce Sewell.

The change comes on the heels of a turbulent winter that included a unionized patrol strike at Park City Mountain, Utah, the unionized lift mechanics at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, Colo., authorizing a strike but reaching a contract agreement to avoid the picket lines, and mounting pressure from investors over perceived operating challenges, including staffing and service levels.

Katz, who has served as executive chairperson since stepping down as CEO, struck a forward-looking tone in a message to employees. "It is an honor to step back into the role of CEO of Vail Resorts, and it is a privilege to lead the incredible people who make our resorts and our company so special. ... While the environment and the company itself have changed, what remains the same is our deep-rooted commitment to all our stakeholders, including to our team members, our truly unique mountain resorts, and the communities we serve, as well as to our culture of innovation and constant improvement,” he said.

"It has been an experience of a lifetime to serve 14 years on the executive team at Vail Resorts, including more than three years as CEO,” said Lynch. “I want to share my sincerest appreciation to all our talented team members for their passion for our mountains, our guests, and our communities. ... I am a lifelong champion of Vail Resorts and look forward to seeing the next phase of the company's journey."
