SAM Magazine—Aspen, Colo., February 11, 2022—Aspen Skiing Company (Ski Co.) said Thursday it will give all salaried and hourly employees a $3/hr raise, effective Sunday, Feb. 13. AspenEmploymentThe move boosts starting pay to $20/hr for most hourly employees and represents an annual increase of $6,240 for those in salaried positions.

“This is an investment in our employees, our community, and our future as a business,” said Ski Co. president and CEO Mike Kaplan. “I have heard from many of our employees about how tough this year has been. The goal here is to say thank you, to offer encouragement for the future, and honor their commitment to their work.”

Back in November, Ski Co. raised starting wages from $15/hr to $17/hr as part of a $3 million payroll investment focused on boosting starting pay for new employees, raising the hourly wage for second-, third-, and fourth-year employees, and increasing entry pay for salaried workers to $50,000.

The two wage increases represent a combined $15 million payroll investment for the fiscal year.

While housing and affordability remain challenges in the Aspen area, that investment appears to be having a positive impact on staff recruitment at Ski Co this season. “We hired more people than we’ve ever hired before,” vice president of communications Jim Hanle told Aspen Times. “We just had more positions (to fill) than we’ve ever had,” he added.
