SAM Magazine—Valley County, Idaho, Aug. 14, 2025—A lightning-sparked wildfire that ignited late Aug. 12 is burning about 1.5 miles south of Tamarack Resort, Idaho, and has prompted the Valley County Sheriff’s Office to issue a “ready” stage evacuation notice advising nearby communities of the potential need for an evacuation.
The Rock Fire has grown to 1,897 acres, according to a Thursday morning update from the Boise National Forest, and is being fought with a full suppression strategy. A complex incident management team is set to arrive Friday to bolster operations, logistics, and community engagement.
Fire crews have built containment lines and cleared defensible space around homes and infrastructure in the area. Several long-range spot fires that ignited within Tamarack Resort’s ski runs have been suppressed without further spread. The resort is proactively running snow guns to saturate areas around the property and reduce risk, according to a report by Teton Gravity Research.
Tamarack Resort began suspending activities Wednesday morning, initially closing its marina and golf course before shutting down all operations that afternoon. The closure continued Thursday due to fire activity and poor air quality. “The safety of those fighting the fires at or near our resort, as well as our guests, employees, and community, remains our highest priority,” the resort said in a statement.
Stills captured from the resort’s summit webcam, which is no longer live, show smoke and flames burning just beyond the peak.
Other nearby fires sparked during the Aug. 12 lightning storm have either been contained or consumed by the Rock Fire. Winds, dry conditions, and long-range spotting remain concerns for fire managers, according to the latest incident report.
